4. Tejas Chocolate Factory 5. 2M Smokehouse 6. The Pit Room
A lot has been going on in my life since my last post, however there is a few spots that I have hit up in that time. My wife and I moved to San Antonio from Houston. This has stopped me from being as timely as I would want to. As a result, I will just give brief reviews of these two as memories fade with time. I am going to start making notes in order to better keep an idea of what the pro/cons were of each stop. Also I am going to try to put more of the details that I would appreciate into these reviews.
4. Tejas Chocolate Factory
Located in Tomball, Texas. As the name implies it was not always a BBQ stop but was originally a boutique chocolate shop. This changed when the owner brought in his brother, a chef, to change it up a bit and offer barbecue. This is the first place I have been to since starting this odyssey that was ranked in the top 10 by Texas Monthly. It did not disappoint. I got a quarter pound of brisket and pork ribs. Both were outstanding. The brisket was moist, smoky, and had a great bark. The pork rib was sweet and salty all at the same time. Overall it was the best BBQ brisket I've had since beginning this quest. The location was adorable, though it is very small. They clearly are having some growing pains due to their overnight fame as a result of the Texas Monthly article.
What I had: 1/4lb brisket, 1/4lb pork ribs, and a sweet tea
What it cost: 15ish dollars
Food Score: 9/10
Restaurant layout/ambiance: 9/10
Final Score: 9/10
5. 2M Smokehouse
My first stop in San Antonio was 2M Smokehouse. I got two brisket tacos, and the wife had turkey. We shared some of their mac n cheese. Everything was very good. I had pico de gallo on the taco, and it was nice and spicy. The brisket on it's own was very good. The turkey was good as well. The mac n cheese was very cheesy, however lacked flavor. Overall 2M Smokehouse was quite good, however not as exceptional as Killens or Tejas. It had plenty of character though, and I will likely go to again.
What I got: two brisket tacos, 1/2lb turkey, mac n cheese, and a drink
What I paid: I can't recall
Food Score: 8/10
Restaurant layout/ambiance: 7.5/10
Final score: 8/10
6. The Pit Room
This is a restaurant in Houston's Montrose area. Aesthetically it is great. I really liked the layout of the restaurant. They had lot's of outdoor seating which was perfect for a nice lunch. The issue I had with this restaurant was that the meat seemed like it had been sitting out for a while. The brisket (which was from the flat, and was probably most of the problem) seemed a bit dry. The pork ribs, very tender and possessing great flavor, still did not seem fresh. I went after the main lunch rush, at around 1:30, but I wouldn't think that that would impact anything. I may be overly critical. The food all tasted very good, and if I had gotten moist brisket my review might have been completely different, but for what I paid I expected more. This was the first restaurant that I have been to on the list that seemed to fall short of my expectations.
What I got: two meat plate: brisket, pork ribs, mac n cheese, okra, and a sweet tea
What I paid: $19.75
Food Score: 6.5/10
Restaurant layout/ambiance: 9/10
Final Score: 7/10
