A lot has been going on in my life since my last post, however there is a few spots that I have hit up in that time. My wife and I moved to San Antonio from Houston. This has stopped me from being as timely as I would want to. As a result, I will just give brief reviews of these two as memories fade with time. I am going to start making notes in order to better keep an idea of what the pro/cons were of each stop. Also I am going to try to put more of the details that I would appreciate into these reviews. 4. Tejas Chocolate Factory Located in Tomball, Texas. As the name implies it was not always a BBQ stop but was originally a boutique chocolate shop. This changed when the owner brought in his brother, a chef, to change it up a bit and offer barbecue. This is the first place I have been to since starting this odyssey that was ranked in the top 10 by Texas Monthly. It did not disappoint. I got a quarter pound of brisket and pork ribs. Both were outstanding. The brisket was moist...

2. Roegels Barbecue Co

Rating: 8.5/10 Time spent in line: 0 min Total for the meal $40 for two The second location hit up was Roegels Barbecue Co. It is located in Houston, not that far from where we live. It was an easy stop on a random Sunday. There was no line to speak of so we were able to get our BBQ right away. We got there right about 11:15, so before the after church crowd showed up. I got a two meat plate of ribs and brisket, with a side of mashed potatoes with all the fixins. My wife got a two meat plate of chicken and turkey with mac n cheese and mashed potatoes. The star of the meal was really the pork spare ribs; less of a hill country salt and pepper seasoning and more of a sweeter Memphis style rib it was just how I liked it. The brisket and chicken were very good as well. The sides were better than average I would say. If you stop in definitely get some of their bread, it seemed homemade as did their pickles. Overall there wasn't anything that I disliked about the place, and I wou...

1. Killen's Barbecue

1. Killen’s Barbecue Rating: 8.5 / 10 Distance traveled: 47 miles roundtrip The Spread: Yes it is as delicious as it looks. Ever since moving to Houston, there has been one BBQ location that I have heard about more than any other. That would be Killen’s. Killen's Barbecue  was started in 2013 by Ronnie Killen; a man who has formal cuisine training from Le Cordon Bleu  in London, and has 3 other restaurants in the Houston area. I decided that this would be the perfect place to start my Texas BBQ Odyssey. We went at 5:30 pm on Friday June 23rd, and the line varied from 0-15 minutes while we were there. We luckily did not have to wait at all. I had the beef rib, and pork belly. The wife had the turkey.   Killen’s is known for their beef rib, and it certainly did not disappoint. It was stupendously tender, and with each bite wonderful beef flavor ensued. The pork belly was a pleasant surprise. I had never had pork belly before, and it was a real treat. Im...

It Begins

Why do we like barbecue? Is it some primordial calling? Something that draws us in on heavenly aromas of cooked meat over a smoldering fire left over from our forbearers who hunted animals and roasted their kill over a spit? Is this what brings us to patiently line up, sometimes for hours, to receive a pile of meat on a brown sheet of butcher paper? Personally, I have always loved BBQ. And while I may prefer cooking it myself I am looking forward to traveling all over Texas enjoying the best BBQ that this state has to offer. While we are questioning things, why do I love road trips?   They prematurely wear down your car, you have to spend hours upon hours in a cramped space, and it’s often boring. I believe the reason for this stems from traveling all over the United States with my family over the course of family vacations throughout my childhood. There are very few states in the lower 48 that I have not at least driven through. I believe this inadvertently built up a love of...
